About Me
Hello!
My name is Arif Mahmood, I was born in Vancouver, and raised in Kamloops. After finishing university, I moved back to Vancouver to find work.
I originally found work as a Security Guard for Concord Security for a year before finding my way to the Vancouver Convention Centre and that is where my career started. I was brought into a newly formed department, that had very few processes, policy, and documentation. I made it my mission to create this paperwork, as there was little standardization in the workplace. My work was well liked and I was given a formal title to show for it, Document Librarian!
During university I ended up taking an elective on Microsoft Excel. At the time I didn't realize it would be the best class I could have taken. I have a deep relationship and love for Excel, and enjoy managing stats. If you want to share stories about making monstrosities with nested "if" statements or brute forcing VBA code, let me know!
Since then, reviewing documentation and policy is something that I really enjoy doing. I am never content to work in a system that I feel is inefficient and will do all I can to try to improve the system. I've worked for the BC RCMP and Vancouver Public Library where I worked on their document processes as well.
My current goals are to complete my Bachelors. After that is complete, I have a multiyear plan of certificates to complete, because I just really like having my ducks in a row.
On a more personal more,Â
My one work quirk is that after spending five years of working in a suit, I have a hard time wearing anything more casual than slacks and a dress shirt.
In my free time, I like to go hiking, listening to audio books, tending to my garden, and take my bike out. I am also really good at pretending I know how to fix my car, but being inept at auto repair. I've also guest starred in some dance troops, and video projects for friends.
My current reading backlog is:
The Gulag Archipelago
The Way of Kings
Nelson: The Life as Told by Himself
You Will Know Me (not sure where my copy came from, but I have it)
